About the source

Zeyn al-Abedin Mirza Qajar, Nofus-e Arz-e Aqdas ya Mardom-e Mashhad-e Qadim, edited by Mehdi Seyyedi (Mashhad: Sazman-e Farhangi-ye Shahrdari-ye Mashhad, 1382 SH / 2003). The tables are the editor’s typeset edition of the 1295 AH register.

The register gives given names and titles only. It does not say which family a household belongs to.

How to read it

  • Each Farsi column has an English partner. Use the language buttons to hide either.
  • Summary shows name, title, trade, class, and household size. All counts adds men, women, elderly, young adults, boys, girls, and infants.
  • “Wealthy” and “commoner” (رعایا, literally “subjects”) are the register’s own class marks. Commoner means a household not in state or shrine service. The register also has a column for poor households. It is not reproduced here.
  • The editor’s introduction gives different totals for some categories: 54 wealthy households (the rows give 80), and 44 Mollas, 10 Karbala’is, 6 Aghas and 4 Hajis (the rows give 56, 9, 5 and 6). This table reports what the rows say.
  • Row 935’s trade word is unresolved. A Persian reader could not tell whether it is a trade or a family name, and the editor’s own table marks it with a question mark.
  • Rows 456 and 1261 have a printed total that does not match their parts. We kept the printed figure and flagged it. Click “note” on a row to read why.
  • The English names are transliterations, not source text.
